By Chris Vaccaro

Westhampton Beach wrestlers had not dropped a match since December 22, when they were downed by Copiague. That changed on Friday when Mt. Sinai handed the Hurricanes their second dual meet loss of the season, a 33-26 defeat. Mount Sinai’s Michael Powers put the finishing touches on the win when he pinned Westhampton Beach’s Kyle Hubbard at 135 pounds in 5:49.

“We did our homework on them and the lineups worked very well,” Hurricanes head coach Paul Bass said. “Our kids wrestled their hearts out and you can’t ask them to do more than that.”

The Hurricanes picked up wins from Conner Bass (103 pounds), Pete Detore (112), Ethan Mitchell (130), Brian Kobus (152), John Prudenti (160) and Paul Dilandro (171).

Two days , downed Shoreham-Wading River, 48-27, in another dual meet. “When Shoreham’s good, they’re very good,” Bass said. “I think we’re getting better every week.”

Against Shoreham, the Hurricanes got wins from Bass (103), Detore (112), Cory Hubbard (119), Mitchell (130), Kyle Hubbard (135), Dennis Hayes (140), Kobus (145), Prudenti (160) and Alex Mazarkis (171).

On Saturday, the Hurricanes wrestled in the William Floyd Tournament and finished third in a field that included many tough opponents, including Wantagh, Plainedge and Connetquot. All of those squads are ranked in the top 10 on Long Island in various wrestling polls.

Wantagh won the tournament with 229 points, Connetquot finished second with 228.5 points and the Hurricanes had 216.5 points to round out the top three finishers.

Detore was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and was a champion at 103 pounds. Conner Bass took second at 96 pounds. Zach Bass placed sixth at 112 pounds and Ethan Mitchell was sixth at 130 pounds.

In addition, Hubbard was a champion at 135 pounds while Hayes placed third at 140 pounds. Kobus was third in the 145-pound match. John Prudenti advanced to the finals at 152 pounds and lost. Mazarkis finished fifth at 160 pounds.
The Hurricanes wrestle in a dual meet against Elwood-John Glenn on Friday, January 25, at 6 p.m.
