Southampton Press When he stepped into the starting rotation in early January, Westhampton Beach sophomore Ryan Marin won his first outing against Newfield on January 6, but he then ran into a string of some of the county’s top wrestlers losing four straight bouts in matches against Shoreham/ Wading River, Rocky Point, Harborfields and Mattituck. That run of luck made a 180-degree turn in the match with Amityville on January 24 when he stuck Gareth Bernard in 5:29 at 130 pounds. Heading into the third period, the match was tied at 7-7. Marin went up 8-7 after Bernard went for an optional start to open the final period. With 45 seconds to go, Marin took Bernard down and pinned him 14 seconds later. “That was the match of the night,” Westhampton Beach coach Paul Bass said of Marin’s pin. “He was thrust into the lineup and ran into four countyranked kids in a row, so this was a nice win for him. It was a toss-up match and he went out and stuck the kid. He’s a winner. He’s won on every level he’s wrestled at and he always gives everything he has.” Westhampton Beach trailed 12-6 when Marin took the mat. His pin tied the score at 12-12 and then a forfeit at 135 by Amityville put Westhampton Beach up 18-12, a lead the Canes wouldn’t give back on their way to a 31-22 win. Before Marin’s pin, Cory Hubbard won a decision at 112 pounds, and Ethan Mitchell, who moved into the lineup for a sick Scott Lagoumis, scored two nearfall points as time expired for a 7-5 decision over Michael Rudnick at 125. Also winning against Amityville were Joe Santaly-Graf (140), Paul Dilandro (145)
and Steve Kobus (189). Teammate Dilandro also got a boost in the county rankings, moving from sixth to third in the January 25 listings at 145 pounds. The win over Amityville moved the Hurricanes to 3-3 in League VI with one match remaining, a road match with Mount Sinai tomorrow. After the win over Amityville, some Westhampton Beach wrestlers competed in the Herricks Highlander Tournament on Saturday, while 18 of their teammates missed the tournament due to various illnesses, injuries or family matters. “I have no problem with that many guys missing the tournament because it’s that time of year,” coach Bass said. “I would rather be safe than sorry. We have one match left and I’d like to win that one. It would be a nice win to get after the frustrations we’ve had this season.” Kobus and freshman Pete Detore were crowned champions at 96 and 189 pounds, respectively, at Herricks. Kobus’s four wins at the tournament brought his career total to 70 varsity victories. Conner Bass (96), Cory Hubbard (112) and Mike Miller (152) were all runnerups in
their weight classes.
