Hurricanes Drop 2nd League Match, Fall to Hauppauge, 34-20
By Kerry Monaco

It came down to the final two bouts in the dual match between the Westhampton Beach wrestling team and Hauppauge at Westhampton Beach High School on Wednesday, January 30. The Hurricanes (4-2, 8-3 overall) trailed by 11 points and needed pins in the last two matches to win, but could manage only a win and a loss, giving the Eagles (5-1, 7-3 overall) a 34-20 victory.

The Hurricanes hosted Sayville yesterday in the squad’s final League IV dual match of the season.

“Hauppauge is one of the top 10 teams on Long Island,” said Westhampton Beach coach Paul Bass. “Our kids wrestled hard but it just did not work to our favor.”

Hauppauge jumped to a 10-0 lead after Nick Batista (215) pinned Jason Herrick in 1:30 and Steve Iannello (103) defeated Ryan Spano, 15-4.

But the Hurricanes stormed back.

With 45 seconds remaining in the 112-pound bout, Knight Dan Baumgarten came to within one point of Todd Fitzgerald with an escape, bringing the score to 7-6. Fitzgerald took Baumgarten down 10 seconds later to cushion his lead to three points and hang on to take a 9-7 decision.

The Hurricanes came to within one point when Hauppauge forfeited to Jay Fredette at 119 pounds, bringing the score to 10-9.

Rob Fredette (125) gave Westhampton Beach a 14-10 lead with a superior decision over Vinnie Giattino. Rob Fredette jumped to a 13-4 lead after two periods and then earned three takedowns during the third period to boost his lead to 19-6 to earn five team points for the Hurricanes.

Hurricane Kyle Berglin and Knight Mike DiSanto were scoreless during the first two periods at 130 pounds. Berglin got on the board with a takedown 15 seconds into the third period, but DiSanto took Berglin down with 33 seconds to go in the bout and earned three near fall points as time expired to earn the 5-2 decision, and cut the Hurricane lead to 14-13.

Casey Ross (135) pinned Bobby Pisaneschi in 2:32, giving the Eagles a 19-14 lead. The Eagles brought their lead to 25-14, when Frank Marro (140) earned a 7-0 decision over Travis Chornoma and Garette Ress defeated Rob Terchunian, 8-2.

Hurricane Brian Schmidt (152) defeated Chad McGoughlin, 3-0, but then Eagle Jack Meyer (160) answered with a 4-1 decision over Mike DeStefano, to boost Hauppauge to a 28-17 lead.

The Hurricanes still had a chance to win the match, but needed to earn pins in the final two bouts in order to pull off a victory.

John Krupp (171) managed three team points as he defeated Scott Solimini, 6-3, but that put the meet out of reach. Frank Schlegel (189) was pinned by Ryan Roman in 23 seconds, to give Hauppauge the 34-20 win.

“We are banged up,” said Bass. “We had four starters that were either sick or injured and they still wrestled. They gave it all they had but they were not 100%. It is time for us to heal and get healthy for the end of the year push.”

Westhampton Beach will host and compete in the League IV Tournament on February 16.
