Westhampton’s DiLandro Falls To Nemesis Mazara In County Final

Stony Brook - At the end of the day, Westhampton Beach’s Paul DiLandro had to just
tip his cap to rival Angel Mazara.
Three times this season the two met, and three times it was the Amityville star whose hand was raised after six
minutes. At the Suffolk County Division 1 Championships, held at Stony Brook University’s Athletic Complex, DiLandro’s
frustrations were evident after his nemesis took home a 6-2 decision to earn a bid at next month’s state championships
in Rochester.
“He made a few adjustments, I made a few adjustments, and what it came down to is he beat me,” DiLandro said. “He
was better.”

Westhampton senior Alex Mazarakis tries with all his might to pin
West Babylon's Marvin Titus-Casseus. Instead, Mazarakis himself
with struck a round later.
The senior co-captain was one of three Westhampton wrestlers to place in the counties,
accounting for much of the Hurricanes’ 52 points, good enough for 15th in the team race. The feat also allowed
Westhampton to extend its streak of multiple county place-winners to nine, joining Longwood, Brentwood and Huntington.
Four Brentwood wrestlers emerged as county champs in helping the Indians to the team title. Their 163.5 points
edged out Hauppauge (145.5) for their first county championship since 1977. Last year’s champ, Islip, took 12th
(55).
DiLandro was the top dog for Westhampton. He won three matches, including two over league champions, in reaching
the 152-pound final. There he met Mazara, who won a pair of hard-fought decisions between the two earlier in the
season, including at the League VI championships the previous week. With the county championship on the line, Mazara
scored a takedown in the first period, nearly pinned DiLandro in the second, and then held on for a 6-2 victory
in the latest – and perhaps final – installment in their rivalry.
“If you beat Paul DiLandro three times, you deserve it,” Westhampton Head Coach Paul Bass said. “Angel’s a very
good athlete, and he’s also smart enough to make adjustments while we were making adjustments. It was a chess match.
I think he was just a little bit better.”
“His style contrasts with mine a lot,” DiLandro said. “He likes to hang back, keep his space, and control the pace
of the match. I’d much rather go out there snapping down and start banging heads.”

Hurricanes sophomore Pete DeTore gets to his feet and shakes
free of Brentwood's Humberto Garcia.
DiLandro now awaits word on whether he’ll get another crack at Mazara at states.
Four wild-card berths are distributed among the 11 sections, and Bass feels that his senior’s odds are “pretty
good.” DiLandro’s resume is an impressive one. His record stands at 32-4, his losses coming to Mazara and the county
runner-up at 160 pounds, Copiague’s Randy Marine. On the weekend, DiLandro defeated two league champions – Islip’s
Matt Egan by pin and Paul DiIorio, the bracket’s top seed, 11-5 in the semifinals. He also beat League IV champ
Tom Bosch of Kings Park in December’s Half Hollow Hills East Tournament.
“My goal was to take first obviously,” DiLandro said. “You don’t come to a tournament looking to take second. I
guess it’s all right. Hopefully now I’ll get a wild card and go up to states.”
Young and Restless
Freshman Conner Bass and sophomore Pete DeTore had to wrestle five matches to earn their awards. Bass, the coach’s
son, finished fourth in the 96-pound weight class by going 3-2 in five matches over two days. That he was the League
VI champion didn’t clear an easy path for Bass by any means. In his opening-round match, Bass managed to stick
League II runner-up J.J. Stines of Central Islip, despite having fallen down 5-0 early. He then roared back from
7-2 down against Hauppauge’s Adam Lepkowsky to win 11-10 in his quarterfinal match.
Bass’ championship hopes came to an end in the semifinals, where he lost a 12-0 decision to Rocky Point’s Matt
Ross.
“I thought he impressed people with his guts, but I think he could do a lot better if he improves his technique,”
Coach Bass said. “He has all the intangibles to be a champion. He won matches with his mental toughness, his physicalness
and because he has no fear of failure.”

Conner Bass' road to the championship was blocked by Rocky Point's Matt Ross.
In last year’s 96-pound bracket, Ross was pinned by DeTore in the third-place match.
This year, DeTore settled for sixth at a stacked 103-pound bracket. The sophomore manhandled Brentwood’s Humberto
Garcia, 8-0, in his first match before falling to top seed Jose Vasquez of Huntington. DeTore avenged a loss to
Mount Sinai’s Anthony Powers in their wrestle-back match, but dropped his next two to Huntington’s Nigel McNeil
and Longwood’s Nicky Hall.
“He was in an unbelievable bracket,” Bass said. “He won some close matches and lost some close matches. If you
get on the podium two years in a row in the county, you’re doing something right.”
Cory Hubbard, Kyle Hubbard, Dennis Hayes and Alex Mazarakis also earned a trip to counties with top-three finishes
at the League VI meet.
