DeTore’s Revenge Ignites Westhampton To Rout Of Amityville On The Mats

Amityville - For nearly a year, Westhampton Beach sophomore Pete DeTore had to think about a dark two-minute period
in an otherwise brilliant debut season. Cruising along as a first-year wrestler, DeTore ran into a roadblock against
Amityville, falling to Mico Wong by way of a first-period pin.
DeTore waited and waited and finally exacted revenge, beating Wong by decision at 112 pounds to highlight the Hurricanes’
37-18 triumph over their league rivals.
“Pete struggled with confidence, being a freshman and the new kid,” Westhampton Head Coach Paul Bass said, “and
then he went and had an unbelievable counties. It really gave him a lot of confidence, and it’s important because
he’s so talented. [This match] was one of his low points last year, and I think he really wanted to avenge that.”

Dennis Hayes of Westhampton reverses Amityville's Jermaine Jacobs with two seconds remaining
to escape with a one-point win.
In the early moments, the match looked to be a carbon copy of last year as Wong
had DeTore on his back even earlier in the first period. However, DeTore fought back, and scored near-falls in
both the second and third periods.
“This year was the same thing; he put me right to my back," DeTore said. "I didn’t relax this time. I
came right out, and after that, all the scrambling I did the first period totally broke him down for the second
period. I hit him right down to his back, and he gave up.”
When the buzzer sounded indicating the match was over, DeTore rose to his feet and began clapping at the center
of the mat. He was greeted by hugs and applause from his coach and teammates. Still, DeTore couldn’t help but recognize
he came mere inches from a true reversal of fortune. “I wanted to pin him. If I pinned him, I got money from my
dad,” DeTore said with a laugh. “He gave it to me anyway, though.”
Momentum From Amityville
The Hurricanes (6-3, 2-0 League VI) entered the match off a fine win in the Westhampton Dual Meets Tournament on
Jan. 5. Momentum from that and the Amityville victory will be important when they face a brutal stretch over the
next two weeks – dual meets against Shoreham-Wading River, Mount Sinai and maybe the favorite to win the league,
John Glenn.

Amityville's Robert Benn tries to break the grasp of Westhampton's Ethan
Mitchell.
“This was a big win for our team,” said 140-pounder Dennis Hayes. “On paper, we
were about even. That shows that our mental game is right there.”
If Detore’s was the most notable Westhampton win, Hayes’ was certainly the most exciting. Amityville’s Jermaine
Jacobs erased a 9-8 deficit late by registering a two-point takedown with 26 seconds remaining. Needing an answer
to punctuate the Hurricanes’ excellent evening, Hayes got the two points back by scoring a reversal with two seconds
remaining to win by decision, 11-10.
“I knew that I was down by a point, and I knew it would be a big win for league seedings at the end of the season,”
Hayes said. “I finally got him off my wrist, then I rolled him and got him to his back.”
Bass also credited Cory Hubbard (119 pounds) and Ethan Mitchell (130) for quality efforts in their wins. Hubbard
and Amityville’s James Banks were tied at eight through two periods; Hubbard benefited when Benn was penalized
two points early in the third, and a late takedown sealed the win, making it two straight against Banks going to
last year. Mitchell wrestled a smart match at 130 pounds, coming back to beat Robert Benn, 11-5. Other Hurricane
victors included Kyle Hubbard (135), Brian Kobus (145) and Nick Mazarakis (171).

The Hurricanes' John Prudenti puts Lesley Porter on his back en route to
a second-round pin.
“I don’t think we really wrestled that well, but we wrestled tough,” Bass said.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match. Amityville always is.”
