Canes Split at Connetquot Tournament
By Kerry Monaco
The Westhampton Beach wrestling team took home a win and a loss from Friday’s Connetquot
Dual Meet Tournament, the team’s first competition of the season. The Hurricanes suffered a 44-30 loss to the host
team but scored a 45-22 victory over Comsewogue. Miller Place was also at the tournament but the two teams did
not wrestle because they compete in the same league during the regular season.
“The guy wrestled very tough,” Westhampton Beach coach Paul Bass said. “I was very impressed with their intensity
and physicality. We made some mistakes but give us a couple of weeks and they will all be corrected and we’ll be
a much stronger team. It was a good start; the younger kids found out that they can really do this.”
Against Connetquot, James Uresk (160), Charlie Pendlebury (215) and Jason Herrick (275) all recorded pins and Rob
Sanfilippo (145) and Travis Chornoma (171) won by technical fall. In the victory over Comsewogue, Kyle Pisaneschi
(112), John Gress (130), Bret Klug (152), Chornoma and Pendlebury had pins. Sanfilippo also scored a win. Coach
Bass also noted that Jay Gress and Nick Broccoli came close to victory in their matches on Friday.
Westhampton Beach will be hosting a junior varsity and varsity dual meet tournament on January 3. The junior varsity
tournament runs from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and the varsity tournament will begin immediately following the JV
tournament.
Westhampton Beach Wrestling Alumni Night
Coach Bass is asking for all of his former wrestlers to come out to the Hurricanes’ first home match of the season
on January 9 against Harborfields. All former wrestlers are also asked to call coach Bass, at either the school
or his home, with their updated addresses so they can receive the Hurricane Wrestling Newsletter.
