The 2006/2007 Wrestling team had an up and down dual meet season, finishing
8-5 and an outstanding tournament season.
We won the Sprig Gardner Tournament (East Hampton) and the Bellport
Tournament, finished 2nd at the Half Hollow Hills East Tournament and 3rd at the Kujan Tournament (William Floyd).
Being true to the motto "It's not how you start it's how you finish" - The team really stepped it up
in the post-season tournaments. Seven Hurricanes were county qualifiers (top 3 in the league). This is impressive
because league 6 was the most dominating league in Suffolk County this year. Qualifying for the Hurricanes were;
96 lbs. Pete Detore 3rd; 112 lbs. Cory Hubbard - 3rd; 125 lbs. Scott Lagoumis - 2nd. Joe Graff 140 lbs. was an
alternate placing 4th.
Because we didn't have a league champion, all seven wrestlers were
unseeded at the county tournament. This must have motivated them because after the first day - 5 wrestlers had
won matches and three (Detore, Dilandro, and Kobus) had advanced to the semi-finals. The 2nd day saw Dilandro 4th,
Detore 3rd and Kobus became our 2nd county champion in two years. This group accomplished some Westhampton firsts:
1st time - 3 wrestlers in the semi-finals; highest point total on the county tournament (67 pts.); 1st top team
10 finish; 1st time three wrestlers finished on the top 4 of their weight class. Congratulations.
Our program has accomplished some amazing things over the last decade.
Here are some statistics.
We are one of only 5 teams in Suffolk County to have at least 2 All-County wrestlers every year since 2000.
(Last 8 seasons).
Dual meet record on 100-52 in the last 12 seasons (we have been the toughest league
in the county in more than ½ of those years). 11 out of 12 winning seasons.
League dual meet record of 20-5 in the last 4 years.
All of this has been accomplished with a very dedicated coaching staff from all levels. Our coaching staff is special
because each one of our coaches possesses the qualities that we'd like to pass on to out children. They are terrific
role models who understand the concept of "program" at every level the coaches are preparing the wrestlers
for the next level. Here is our coaching staff.
Kid Wrestling - Jeff Ciolino, Vinny Ciolino, and Dave Tanzman.
Middle School Westhampton Beach - Korey Williams, Kevin Turbush, Ray and Fred Musimeci.
Middle School East Moriches - Steve Curtis
High School - Assistant Varsity Emmons and volunteers Jeff Ciolino, Kevin Turbush and Scott Detore.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our fans, supporters
and parents for their unprecedented support. Many times this year, other coaches have commented on our fan support.
More than fifty people made the trip to Albany to support Steve Kobus at the state championships. Our parents have
worked very hard to both raise money for our off-season endeavors and to help create a family atmosphere for our
kids. They have made possible a welcoming breakfast; a post season brunch; a highlight video; a Hurricane all-county
wall of honor outside the wrestling room and charter a bus for our wrestlers to camp in July. These are the things
that help us maintain our status of one of the top programs on the island. Thank you.
To close, I know I speak for all of our coaches when I wish our departing
seniors the best of luck on their post high school endeavors. I know the lessons of discipline, hard work and overcoming
adversity that you've experienced in wrestling will help you succeed. Make us proud!
Sincerely,
Coach Bass
